December 20, 2024 - Three of Comal ISD’s marching bands advanced to state contests this fall with Davenport High School earning the bronze medal in the UIL 4A competition, and both Pieper High School and Smithson Valley High School competing in the UIL 5A division. All three were recognized for their exceptional marching seasons by the Comal ISD Board of Trustees December 19.
This was the third consecutive year for the DHS Wolf Band to advance to the state contest in only its fifth year in UIL competition. In addition, the band placed first in music ensemble.
“This year’s show, titled ‘Bloom,’ is about taking risk to be the best version of ourselves,” says Jeffrey Keyes, director of bands.
The Wolf Band consists of 181 students including 45 color guard members. Drum majors are Eli Bliss, Emma Cuencar, Natalie Drichta and Jozie Steele. The band is under the direction of Keyes, Tyler McClendon and Michael Lehmann.
Two Comal ISD bands advanced to this year’s UIL 5A marching contest. Pieper High School’s Band of Warriors qualified for the contest for its second consecutive year in only its fourth year in existence. Its show, titled “Come Together,” featured music from the Beatles including “Eleanor Rigby,” “In My Life” and “Come Together.”
This year’s band consists of 215 members with 42 color guard. Drum majors are Laney Flores, Aron De La Garza, Alleyne Perez and Ava Taylor. It is under the direction of Evan Berry, director of bands, Allyn Conner, Scott Lowe, Thomas Shafer and John Arroyo.
In its third consecutive year to advance to the 5A state contest, the Smithson Valley Ranger Band consists of 162 students. This year’s show, titled “UnBound,” plays homage to the roots of its community and school mascot as a western with steampunk flair, says Mike Childress, director of bands.
The show included music from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly; the Mandalorian, the Lone Ranger, Lynard Skynrd and more. This year’s drum majors are Maddie Cuff, Aidan Kellner and Paisley White. The color guard captains are Daylin Blake, Ashley Dudzikowski, Bridgette George and Mary Grace McCash.
The Ranger Band is under the direction of Childress, Robby Andrade, Scott Duncan and Travis Land.
